Nick’s current paintings are based on figures taken out of their environments (usually by collaging random photos) and combined in new contexts. These contexts are often the backgrounds of other photos taken from the internet. The aim is to see if the figures resonate in some unexpected way with their new environments.
When an unexpected tension between the figures within these environments is chanced upon (sometimes implying a narrative) a painting is made based on the collage.
‘The process seems to me a useful way of circumventing a predictable or conscious approach to grouping figures. I like to discover the reasons for their presence together as the collage or final picture progresses. I also want to allow the paint to dictate the direction the picture takes. I try therefore to leave the preparatory collages quite unresolved so that discoveries can be made in
