Caroline Deane graduated from the British School in Rome, Beijing’s Central Academy of Art and London’s Byam Shaw School of Art.
In recent years she has been exhibiting in China and in London. Caroline has also been exhibited regularly with several central London art galleries. In addition to this she has been featured annually in national art fairs both in and outside of London since 2002.
As an artist she describes herself as a classically influenced contemporary artist. In her figure sketches she draws inspiration from ancient Chinese philosophy and painting, working with the ideas behind traditional oriental painting.
During her most recent year in Beijing, in 2009/10, circumstances fortuitously led her to a different style of work. Without an available model, she began working on her still life oil series. This was based the streets and surroundings of Beijing.
Caroline paints largely on linen or a pre-prepared coloured surface, it’s voice always leaking through and sometimes contributing to the statement.
She was lucky in that her mother in law’s kitchen was always full of interesting things. These included old match boxes, bent scissors, aluminium bowls dating back to the 1950s and fascinating items from the Cultural Revolution.
Now Caroline is back in London. She is constantly on the lookout for subject matter, often finding it in Portobello market.
Ultimately her paintings constitute layers of time, observation of colour mixed, chasing the light to tell a consistent story.
Now back in her London studio, she is alternating between oil painting and figure drawing.
Caroline believes our brain can be divided between the emotional/spiritual, and the intelligent/structural and challenges herself to express her work simultaneously with all of this. She wants to, at times, go beyond the physical drawing and painting.
She aspires to produce a piece of art with conscious emphasis and de-emphasis. In addition to this she looks to include points of impact, points of subtlety, good pictorial design.
Above all she wants to express herself with conviction, intelligence and honesty.
