Emma delicately cuts images, especially trees, from a medium like felt or paper and pins them minutely to their chosen background, raised ethereally from the surface, forming beautiful shadows and layers.
‘’Colour, texture and light all inspire, delight and inform me. I look for the journey of my materials particularly paper- its source, it’s evolution to a finished piece and its eventual destination. It’s a silent language usually revealing itself beyond completion. I like to feel fragility and a quiet change between colour and texture. I want light to filter and cast shadows over each work gently forming new life, movement and dimension.
I watch for the space in each piece, how the eye travels around the image, how light on the pins pushes the layers forward. I listen to what each piece asks for.’’
– I studied Fashion and Textiles at St. Martin’s College in London and went on to work in London, Paris and India. I have exhibited in London with Serena Morton, London Contemporary Art, throughout the United Kingdom and in the United States with Art Bastian.
– I am a multidisciplinary artist and my practice starts with watching and observing the natural world in all its cycles. The trees dressing themselves in Spring green to then dropping their leaves to reveal the intricacy of branches silhouetted against the Winter skyline. Capturing the singular beauty of oaks, cedars, alders, hawthorns, copper beech, I then translate those images through laser cutting. Then I place them hovering over paper, silk and linen.
– Documenting many ancient trees across England, is an enduring subject. More recently I have refocused my love of flowers and found a contemporary digital medium to bring thousands of
photographs alive playing with exuberant colours and layers. It is a wellspring of superabundance.
